Accokeek school could start year with no moniker Parents call it the school with no name. Henry G. Ferguson Elementary School in Accokeek will merge with neighboring Eugene Burroughs Middle School beginning this fall with a combined population of 1,100 students. But among the logistical difficulties of merging two schools into one, a lingering detail has yet to be addressed: the school name. Construction is well under way to link the two schools via a walkway and internal wiring, but parents say they have been left in the dark as the Prince George County school board has yet to officially announce the name of the school. Under a plan the board approved in March, Ferguson and Burroughs buildings will be consolidated into one complex with kindergarten through eighth grades, and students will continue to use both buildings. The merger is a part of a larger school consolidation plan meant to save the school system $5 million during the 2009 2010 academic year. thought [the school] had a name. That interesting, said Denise Foskey, a parent at Ferguson, upon learning about the lack of a moniker for the new complex. can say to people this is where my son is attending school when the school has no name. Vice chair Ron L. Watson (At large) said the naming process for the school hasn yet been started and that it is likely that the school may not have an official name by the start of the school year. name comes last, quite frankly. That at the bottom of the list, Watson said. not late. We not behind. We just have to prioritize what we doing. say they are miffed by the school board delay in announcing the name of the complex as a mountain of tasks hinge upon the decision: What name will be used for the school morning announcements, uniforms, mailing envelopes and school bank accounts? According to Foskey, during the first week of June parents collectively decided that the school should be named Accokeek Academy and were asked to submit their recommendations by e mail to Ferguson principal Monique Davis, who was selected in June to head the new complex, and Zone 6 director Janice Briscoe. Ray Lacy, PTA president at Ferguson Elementary, said the discussion about selecting a name then went cold because the school year ended and the school board had discontinued meetings until after their summer break. According to board policy, there must be a meeting with the board, community and the Capital Improvement Program subcommittee before a school name is selected. Parents have pointed to the June announcement by the school board to name a new elementary school in Upper Marlboro after President Barack Obama as proof of the board ability to move quickly on decisions, as it took the school board only three months to determine its name. But Watson said the two schools can be compared because naming a school that has yet to be built is an easier process than naming one that is in the midst of a merging. The Accokeek school complex, he said, has been particularly consuming because of the logistics of merging two fully functioning schools under one administration some details, he said, have been put on the backburner. Davis said she had been confident the school board would decide on a name before school starts. But she said that regardless of the outcome she is focused on educating students come the start of the school year.
